Job summary
The Editor of the Day (EOD) – Bureau Chief combines leading the daily editorial output of the language service with managing the bureau in Rome.
As Editor of the Day, he/she oversees the daily production and broadcasting of news on digital platforms and on TV, with a digital-first approach. He/she leads the daily team of journalists, assigns and approves stories before publication, and supervises live broadcasts, breaking news, push notifications and special events. He/she prepares and priorities rundowns and bulletins, handles Front Page Editing, SEO optimisation and live blogs, and is responsible for the quality and accuracy of all content published across Euronews channels.
As Bureau Chief, he/she manages the bureau’s staff and planning, and acts as the local relay with the central HR department, overseeing recruitment, training, performance evaluation and day-to-day HR and management matters. He/she coordinates workflow and assignments with other departments and bureaus, represents Euronews with external stakeholders such as officials, organisations and other media, ensures compliance with the editorial line and ethical standards, and leads the bureau’s response in times of crisis.
The EOD – Bureau Chief reports hierarchically to the Head of News of the European Central Newsroom.
Main responsibilities
As Bureau Chief
- Workflow coordination: coordinates workflow and assignments between the bureau and the central newsroom, managing deadlines, setting priorities and ensuring the team operates efficiently. Collaborates closely with other departments and bureaus to coordinate coverage and share resources.
- High-level interviews and election coverage secures and conducts interviews with senior political and institutional figures and plays a leading role in planning and delivering the bureau’s election coverage (debates, results nights, live specials).
- Staff management and HR issues: responsible for the bureau’s planning, including shift schedules, rotas, leave and holiday planning, always ensuring adequate staffing and coverage, including weekends and special events. Responsible for hiring and training new team members, conducting performance evaluations and providing feedback and mentorship. As the first point of contact in the office, the bureau chief handles day-to-day HR issues such as absences, remote-work requests and working conditions, escalates sensitive situations to the HR, legal or IT departments, ensures that policies and procedures are properly applied, and fosters a positive work environment.
- External relations and network: as the representative of the Italian desk, builds and maintains relationships with external stakeholders, including government officials, political parties, institutions, local organisations and other media, to gather information, gain access to events and secure interviews. Represents Euronews as a company under the supervision of central management.
- Budgeting and resource allocation allocates funds for reporting trips, freelance contributions and other necessary resources, in coordination with the central newsroom and the finance department.
- Compliance and ethics ensure compliance with Euronews’ editorial line and upholds legal and ethical standards in journalism, maintaining editorial independence, adhering to the organisation’s code of conduct and fostering responsible reporting within the bureau.
- Crisis management: in the event of a crisis or emergency affecting the region covered by the bureau, plays a key role in managing the bureau’s response. This requires flexibility to coordinate coverage and deliver timely, accurate updates to headquarters.
As Editor of the Day
- Build the day’s news coverage by selecting the topics to be covered online and on air.
- Oversee the daily production and broadcasting of news items on digital platforms and on TV.
- Lead and supervise the daily team of journalists, assigning stories and approving them before publication.
- Supervise live broadcasts, breaking news, push notifications and special events.
- Prepare, prioritise, edit and distribute the rundowns of all bulletins, ensuring each one meets its allotted duration.
- Ensure the quality and accuracy of all news stories and multimedia content published across Euronews channels.
- Guarantee that all content is consistent with Euronews’ values and editorial positioning on every platform.
- Write news articles and manage Front Page Editing, SEO optimisation and live blogs with the team, in line with a digital-first approach.
- Feed the vertical scroll to enrich the channel and bring it closer to the digital world.
- Ensure push notifications are sent out quickly and accurately.
- Coordinate breaking news situations using the available resources, processes and tools (live blogs, live on air, push notifications).
- Monitor story performance through audience and page-view data.

With the upcoming parliamentary elections and a dense political agenda ahead, Euronews will significantly step up its coverage of Italian and European politics. For this reason, we are looking for an experienced journalist with a strong, well-established network of contacts among political, institutional and economic decision-makers, able to secure interviews and exclusive access.

Experience and technical skills
- Registered with the Italian Ordine dei Giornalisti (elenco professionisti)
- at least 8 years of professional experience in news media (audiovisual and online), including significant experience covering Italian politics.
- a strong, active network of contacts in Italian political, institutional and economic circles, with a proven ability to secure interviews.
- proven experience in preparing and conducting high-level interviews, on camera and live.
- excellent command and professional practice of Italian as a journalist; fluent English (C1 minimum). French or any other Euronews language is a plus.
- broad general knowledge to cover a wide variety of topics, and mastery of news writing in both composition and tone.
- very good digital culture and fluency with technology and web publishing tools.

Contract information :
- Contract type: Permanent
- Salary: €60,000 – €70,000 gross per year, paid over 13 months
- Starting date : 1st of december
- Place of work: Rome
- Working hours: full-time, shift patterns
