Since 1993, Euronews has been the leading international news media in Europe, resulting in a unique European identity and multilingual model in 17 languages (12 language editions and five branded affiliates).

Euronews will launch an editorial bureau in Astana, Kazakhstan which will produce a variety of current affairs content, including several shows focused on heritage, culture, business and regional personalities as well as news coverage. These programs, produced locally, are intended for a global audience and for a comprehensive view of Central Asia and of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

OVERALL MISSION OF THE BUREAU CHIEF & ANCHOR

The Bureau Chief is the leader of the Astana team. She/he ensures the respect of Euronews’ editorial line and the quality of all content on any support, linear or non linear, from the linguistics and journalistic perspectives and has a role of representing the media outside and promote it in the geographical area of his language.

The successful candidate will have a responsibility to manage production team based in Astana who will be working to tight deadlines to produce a diverse set of compelling shows for TV and digital platforms. The ideal candidate will have a background in journalism with a proven track record in producing editorial feature content of the highest quality across TV and digital platforms.

A seasoned journalist with a proven track record, the Bureau Chief’s role will be broad and varied. The successful candidate will need to be an agile operator, able to multi-task and oversee a team working across a diverse range of content, from business shows to digital only content focusing on Central Asia. The bureau chief will also content edit and present one of the shows produced by the bureau.

This role will be based in Astana and can quickly become well connected with the local media landscape to build a team quickly to deliver an intense production schedule. Management experience and a hands-on attitude will be crucial to delivering the amount of content needed in a relatively short period of time. As well as managing the team the successful candidate will also need to represent our Bureau in Astana and have additional corporate and commercial duties.  An ability to balance corporate demands with our editorial integrity so being an efficient self-starter will be crucial.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

Your role, as Bureau Chief & Anchor of Euronews Kazakhstan will be to:

  • Lead the Astana editorial and production teams: the bureau chief leads the overall editorial and production operations of the Astana team to produce a variety of output on television and digital at the highest editorial and production standards, ensuring the editorial integrity and respect of Euronews’ fundamental editorial values.
  • Help Hire & Manage the Astana based team: Work closely with Euronews’ editorial and corporate management and teams to recruit the bureau staff, manage the start-up and overall operations of the office.
  • Hire, coach and supervise personnel: You’ll be tasked with sharing your knowledge and experience of producing first class content to help train and lift the skills and expertise of our newly formed team in Astana. You will also be in charge of managing a diverse team of talented content producers.
  • Plan and manage all daily operations to ensure the most efficient operations and the highest editorial and production standards. That means the right reporters, camera personnel and editors are working together based on the particular requirements of each show.
  • Representation: You will be the face of euronews on the ground in Astana and will need to help build deeper relations with our partners.
  • Track Bureau Budgets: You will need to work closely with euronews’ production managers to ensure the most efficient operational and budgets-respect processes to deliver content efficiently and on time.
  • Quality Control: Work with the central Euronews newsroom to put in place measures to ensure a rigorous process for quality control by leading and overseeing all assignments, scripts, edits and deliveries. You will also need to offer hands on support when it comes to helping edit scripts and shows.
  • Forward Planning: Work closely with the central editorial management and the bureau team to develop the most compelling ideas for upcoming events and conferences.
  • Compliance Knowledge: Be familiar with the rules governing the production of television programmes in France (CSA) and Kazakhstan to make sure we meet all compliance demands and produce content in-line with euronews’ own editorial guidelines and fundamental editorial values.
  • Resolve issues as they arise: The ideal individual for this role will need a flexible approach to work and able to deal with issues as they arise and work closely with the team in Europe to solve issues and offer workable solutions especially when trying to balance client demands with editorial integrity.

Your role, as Anchor will be to:

  • Content edit, present and conduct interviews at the highest editorial and production standards and respect of Euronews’ fundamental editorial values, identity, style and positioning.


REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Success in this role requires an inspirational leader with a diverse experience in making content and leading an editorial team. You will have a passion to develop new formats and explore new subjects that will not only help our advertisers achieve their communication goals but also give our audiences fresh and exciting content to view. You will be collaborative. You will be calm under pressure. A solutions orientated outlook is vital to help solve challenges as they arise. You will need to be a superb communicator and motivator able to inspire and lift your team during times of heavy workloads and demanding schedules. A diplomatic approach to dealing with clients and the sales team is also important. The list above is not all encompassing and the individual who undertakes this role will be expected to undertake a wide range of tasks when called upon by euronews.

Technical Skills

  • Education level required: 4/5 years’ higher education – journalism qualification or equivalent
  • Language skills: excellent command and professional practice of English (near native level). Any additional “Euronews” languages, including Russian, is a plus
  • 8 years of professional experience in news media (audio-visual, online)
  • 5+ years’ experience presenting business and economics content in English and accustomed to working within a multicultural and multilingual setting
  • Excellent eye for a story and good interview skills
  • Broad general knowledge allowing him/her to cover a variety of topics
  • Knowledge and great interest for the CIS region
  • Well connected locally and active local network in the media industry (journalists, production agencies...)
  • Able to understand euronews processes, constraints and production deadlines
  • Track Record in producing high quality features/magazine television & digital content
  • Exceptional ability in copywriting and editing
  • Very good digital culture and fluency in the use of technology and web design

  • Location: Astana, Republic of Kazakhstan
  • Working hours: Full-time.
  • Shift Bureau Chief / Anchor:
    • From Monday to Friday
    • Flexibility required: weekend and nigh work can be required
  • Contract start date: November 2024 (to be confirmed)
