Background:

The Chief of French Edition is the leader of the language service team and as such is responsible for all content produced, published and broadcast by the French team:

• Ensures the respect of Euronews’ editorial line, fundamental editorial values, team operations and all output at the highest editorial and production standards of all content on all platforms, both from a linguistic and journalistic perspective, in terms of speed, accuracy, creativity, competitivity, respect and safeguard of Euronews’ brand and standing
• Drives the daily output of the team under the direction of the editorial management with optimal use of the real-time digital audience measurement tools to maximize the editorial performance of the team output
• Conducts all phases of the team’s original content productions on all platforms and ensures the optimal adaptation of all content produced and distributed by the central newsroom
• Proactively contributes with content, guests, new elements and evolutions ideas to the editorial management in close collaboration with all other language teams
• Manages all operational aspects of the French team such as staff planning, collaboration with the marketing, human resources, finance, commercial services, legal, implements and supervises the respect of company procedures, respect of allocated budgets
• Is responsible for implementing all the strategic, management, operational decisions of the company in the French team and the daily editorial management decisions in all content production areas as well as respecting all legal obligations of the media (copyright, legal media aspects, etc.)
• Represents the media outside and promotes it in the relevant geographical area

The Chief of French Edition reports to the Head of Europe, based in Brussels.

Key responsibilities:

Journalistic coordination of the service and participation in the overall news production of the media

• Guides the overall journalistic output of the language team on all platforms, within the overall news production process of the media, both in original content and adaptations, by imposing inside the service all editorial guidelines as well as the respect of newsroom’s journalistic principles and values
• Is in charge with the planning and production of all original content as agreed with the editorial management, both in terms of field operations and post-production, as well as the adaptation of the central newsroom-produced content
• Contributes to all newsgathering efforts of Euronews, from short-long term editorial and production planning to the daily execution, attending the daily, weekly and ad-hoc editorial meetings conducted by the central newsroom as well as any other meeting involving the participation of the language team to the international output of Euronews
• Proactively proposes coverage plans, ideas, guests, new evolutions of content
• Takes the lead in the Breaking News coverage of events in the team’s geographical and expertise area
• Is responsible for the legal compliance of all content published and broadcast by the language team in their relevant geographical territory
• Manages the scheduling of their team (permanent and non-permanent staff) and the replacement planning for all types of leave in accordance with the company’s overall policy.

Quality control of the language content

• Coordinates and supervises the Editors of the Day as well as the entire team to ensure respect for Euronews’ fundamental editorial values, the constant consistency of the team output on all platforms from a linguistic and a journalistic perspective
• Guidance of journalists regarding language issues in the daily operations

Management

• Conducts regular team meetings to present, discuss, feedback on all editorial and administrative needs of the team
• Communicates all relevant team aspects to the editorial and administrative management
• Full knowledge and skills, competencies, background of team members
• Carries out annual individual appraisals as directed by the company management
• Collaborate with Human Resources to ensure the optimal staffing needs
• Ensures a permanent pool of permanent and freelance journalists to ensure the daily operational needs of the team’s optimal output
• Reception and integration of new hires
• Presentation for the team, supervision of on-the-job training, help to integrate into workflows
• Establishes and communicates the team training needs as requested by the management
• Responsible for the optimal functioning of the team, responsible for all staffing changes, adaptations, evolution, promotion and disciplinary aspects
• Monitors and deals with all viewers’ feedback, both at local and international level, informs the team and the company management
• Nurtures the team staff for an optimal production rate and ensures an optimal work atmosphere of respect\
• Leads by example, ensuring fairness, respect and motivation among all journalists and in relation with all company departments

Representation of the language team

• Under the direction of the company management, Euronews and the language team represent all relations with the national media environment, institutions, authorities, etc.
• Development and sustainability of relations with the media partners in the geographical area of their language (other media, production companies, etc.)
• Advice and suggestions regarding the development of the media presence and audience in the geographical area of the language

 
Your profile:

Experience and technical skills

• Education level required: 4/5 years’ higher education – journalism qualification or equivalent
• Language skills: Excellent command and professional practice of French. English bilingual. Proficiency in any additional “Euronews” languages is a plus.
• Confirmed successful experience in a similar role in a well known media news multiplatform outlet
• Broad general knowledge allowing to cover a variety of topics.
• In-depth understanding of European and French political and economic dynamics.
• Mastery of news writing in its composition and tone.
• Excellent digital culture and fluency in the use of technology (editing, mobile, data journalism) and web design.
