OVERALL MISSION

As bureau chief:

Staff Management: responsible for managing and supervising the staff within the European bureau. This includes ensuring the optimal scheduling of staff shifts, hiring and training new team members, conducting performance evaluations, providing feedback and mentorship, and ensuring a positive work environment. 

Budgeting and Resource Allocation: As Bureau Chief, the EOD oversees allocating funds for reporting trips, freelance contributions, and other necessary resources in coordination with the Intake Desk and other finance services of the company. He/she monitors expenses, ensures adherence to budgetary constraints. 

Workflow Coordination: the EOD / Bureau Chief is responsible for coordinating the workflow and assignments within the bureau. This includes managing deadlines, setting priorities, and ensuring that the team operates efficiently. He/she collaborates closely with other departments or bureaus within the organization to coordinate coverage or share resources. 

External Relations: As the representative of the Warsaw desk, the EOD/Bureau Chief establishes and maintains relationships with external stakeholders. This may involve liaising with government officials, local organizations, and other media outlets to gather information, gain access to events, or secure interviews as well as representing Euronews as a company under the supervision of the central management. 

Compliance and Ethics: As the bureau chief, he/she ensures compliance with Euronews' editorial line and upholds legal and ethical standards in journalism. This entails maintaining editorial independence, adhering to the organization's code of conduct, and fostering responsible and ethical reporting practices within the bureau. 

Crisis Management: In the event of a crisis or emergency impacting the European region covered by the bureau, he/she will play a crucial role in managing the bureau's response. This may involve coordinating coverage, ensuring the safety of staff, and delivering timely and accurate updates to the organization's headquarters. 

The EOD – Bureau Chief reports hierarchically to the managing editor associated with the European Central Newsroom.

As Editor of the Day

Editors of the Day (EOD) oversee the daily production, publication and broadcasting of news items in each language on digital platforms and on TV, giving priority to the publication of information online. They lead and supervise the daily team of journalists from a language department to whom they assign stories to be covered and which they approve before publication.

They supervise live broadcasts, breaking news and push notifications and follow special events. They prepare and prioritize all rundowns and bulletins for broadcast. They are responsible for the quality and accuracy of news stories or multimedia content to be produced and published on all channels of the digital platform.

 In a digital-first approach, the EOD is also responsible for Front Page Editing, SEO optimization and possible live blogs, in collaboration with his/her team.

The Editor of the Day (EOD), currently on assignment, reports to the Deputy Editor-in-Chief.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Build the day's news coverage by selecting the topics to be covered online and on air
  • Responsible for the quality and accuracy of TV and digital content, he/she validates the productions published daily.
  • Guarantee the coherence of the contents about the values and the positioning of Euronews on all platforms.
  • In charge of the Front-Page Editing of the language service's website
  • Edit and distribute the rundown of each bulletin, guaranteeing its duration
  • Responsible for feeding the vertical scroll to enrich the channel and bring it closer to the digital world.
  • Ensure push notifications are sent out quickly, accurately, and precisely.
  • Coordinate breaking news situations based on available resources, processes, and tools (live blog, live on air, push notification.)
  • Ensure performance of stories via audience and page view impact
  • Writes news articles in the language of assignment, especially on weekends.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Technical Skills

  • Education level required: 4/5 years’ higher education – journalism qualification or equivalent
  • Language skills: Excellent command and professional practice of Polish (C2 level). Fluent English (C1 minimum level). Proficiency in French and any additional “Euronews” languages is a plus.
  • 8 years of professional experience in news media (audio-visual, online).
  • Broad general knowledge allowing him/her to cover a variety of topics.
  • Mastery of news writing in its composition and tone.
  • Very good digital culture and fluency in the use of technology and web design.

CONTRACT INFORMATION

  • Location: Warsaw
  • Type of contract: one-year fixed term contract / permanent contract a possibility
  • Contract start date: October 2024
  • Working hours: Full-time.
  • Flexibility required: 3 EOD shifts. Regular weekend work (teleworking); night work possible
