DEPUTY BUREAU CHIEF AND SHOW'S ANCHOR - EURONEWS KAZAKHSTAN

Since 1993, Euronews has been the leading international news media in Europe*, resulting in a unique European identity and multilingual model in 17 languages (12 language editions and five branded affiliates). 

Euronews will launch an editorial bureau in Astana, Kazakhstan which will produce a variety of current affairs content, including several shows focused on heritage, culture, business and regional personalities as well as news coverage. These programs, produced locally, are intended for a global audience and for a comprehensive view of Central Asia and of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

OVERALL MISSION OF THE DEPUTY BUREAU CHIEF AND SHOW'S ANCHOR, ASTANA BUREAU 

The deputy bureau chief leads the day-to-day operations of the Astana bureau in producing the variety of content assigned to the bureau, coordinating all editorial and production teams in achieving the highest editorial and production standards of all broadcast and published content.  

The deputy bureau chief assists the bureau chief in the day-to-day planning and achievement of all content, creation and approval of scripting and editing, quality control, liaison with newsroom. The Deputy Bureau Chief has a responsibility to manage a small production team based in Astana who will be working to tight deadlines to produce a diverse set of compelling shows for TV and digital platforms. The ideal candidate will have a background in journalism with a proven track record in producing editorial feature content of the highest quality across TV and digital platforms.  

The role will also include anchoring bespoke TV shows focusing on Central Asia, particularly Kazakhstan. These unique and unexpected programs will explore themes of cultural diversity, heritage, exciting economic potential, and inspiring regional personalities.

The Deputy Bureau Chief role will be broad and varied. The successful candidate will need to be an agile operator, able to multi-task and oversee a team working across a diverse range of content, from business shows to digital only content focusing on Central Asia. 

This role will need someone who can be based in Astana and can quickly become well connected with the local media landscape to build a team quickly to deliver an intense production schedule. Management experience and a hands-on attitude will be crucial to delivering the amount of content needed in a relatively short period of time. 

The Deputy Bureau Chief reports hierarchically to the Bureau Chief associated with the Editorial Management Team in Brussels. 


MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES 

Your role, as Deputy Bureau Chief in Astana will be to: 

  • Workflow Coordination: the Deputy Bureau Chief is responsible for coordinating the workflow and assignments within the bureau. This includes managing deadlines, setting priorities, and ensuring that the team operates efficiently. He/she collaborates closely with other departments or bureaus within the organization to coordinate coverage or share resources.  
  • Help Hire & Manage the Astana based team:  Work closely with Euronews’ editorial and corporate management and teams to recruit the bureau staff, manage the start-up and overall operations of the office.  
  • Hire, coach and supervise personnel:  share knowledge and experience of producing first class content to help train and lift the skills and expertise of our newly formed team in Astana. 
  • Plan and manage all daily operations to ensure the most efficient operations and the highest editorial and production standards. That means the right reporters, camera personnel and editors are working together based on the particular requirements of each show. 
  • Track Bureau Budgets: work closely with euronews’ production managers to ensure the most efficient operational and budgets-respect processes to deliver content efficiently and on time.   
  • Quality Control: work with the central Euronews newsroom to put in place measures to ensure a rigorous process for quality control by leading and overseeing all assignments, scripts, edits and deliveries. You will also need to offer hands on support when it comes to helping edit scripts and shows.  
  • Forward Planning: Work closely with the central editorial management and the bureau team to develop the most compelling ideas for upcoming events and conferences.  

Your role, as Anchor will be to:

  • Content edit, present and conduct interviews at the highest editorial and production standards and respect of Euronews’ fundamental editorial values, identity, style and positioning.
  • Presenting in a clear, concise, and factual manner. 
  • Collaborate with the other anchors and staff shows 
  • Assist with research and fact-checking as needed 
  • Reporting on breaking news coverage in the region when warranted 
  • Writing and assisting with copy editing of all scripts 
  • Revising scripts 
  • Creating and maintaining a network of contacts 


REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

 Technical Skills 

  • Education level required: 4/5 years’ higher education – journalism qualification or equivalent 
  • Language skills: excellent command and professional practice of English (near native level). Any additional “Euronews” languages is a plus.  
  • 8 years of professional experience in news media (audio-visual, online).  
  • Accustomed to working within a multicultural and multilingual setting 
  • Broad general knowledge allowing him/her to cover a variety of topics. 
  • Knowledge and great interest for the region 
  • Well-connected with production companies and/or talent  
  • Able to understand euronews processes, constraints and production deadlines 
  • Track Record in producing high quality features/magazine television & digital content 
  • Exceptional ability in copywriting and editing 
  • Very good digital culture and fluency in the use of technology and web design.

FURTHER INFORMATION 

  • Location: Astana, Kazakhstan  
  • Working hours: Full-time. 
  • Shift of the Deputy Bureau Chief:  
    • From Monday to Friday 
    • Flexibility required: weekend and night work can be required 
  • Contract start date: at the earliest opportunity.
